Wheeling 101 is an experience for any level of 4x4 rig, from stock to extreme.  For those who are new to off roading or just picked up a new rig, this is your chance to ease into its off road capabilities.  For more experienced drivers, this is your chance to work out any bugs on newly installed parts, or invite a friend to introduce them to the sport.

  • Front and rear tow hooks *screw in tow hooks not acceptable
  • Working lights

  • Working four wheel drive (AWD not acceptable)

This will be the majority of the trail level in the AM session. 


Scenic trails with minor obstacles. Stock vehicles are fine and general use of 4-Wheel Drive may not be necessary.

Blue

More experienced drivers have the opportunity to parallel green trails if they wish.


More challenging trails with moderate obstacles, such as hill climbs, off-camber sections, and rocks.

Likely not part of the itinerary, but can be demonstrated to see the capabilities of extreme 4 wheeling.

9:00 am - Introduction to Off-Roading

  • Importance of safety and responsible off-roading
  • Essential off-roading terminology

9:30 am - Vehicle Prep & Equipment

  •    Understanding Your Vehicle
    • 4WD vs. AWD – What’s the difference?
    • High vs. low gear, differential locks, traction control
    • Ground clearance and approach/breakover/departure angles
  • Essential Off-Road Gear
    • Recovery gear (tow straps, winch, shackles, traction boards)
    • Tire pressure & tools (deflators, air compressors)
    • Navigation tools (GPS, maps, compass)
    • Emergency supplies (first aid, extra fuel, water, food) 

10:00 am - Driving Techniques & Terrain Navigation

  •  Tire Pressure & Traction Control
    • Adjusting tire pressure for different terrains
    • Understanding traction aids and when to use them
  • Techniques for Different Terrains
    • Mud: Maintaining momentum, avoiding wheel spin
    • Sand: Floatation techniques, throttle control
    • Rocks: Picking a line, tire placement, slow and steady approach
    • Hills: Ascending, descending, and sidehill driving techniques
    • Water Crossings: Depth check, avoiding hydro-lock 

10:00 am - Trail Etiquette & Environmental Responsibility

  • Tread Lightly Principles
    • Staying on designated trails
    • Packing out what you pack in
  • Trail Courtesy & Group Rides
    • Right-of-way rules
    • Keeping a safe distance & convoy driving techniques 

10:15 am - Hands-On Driving & Practical Application

  •  Guided Trail Ride
    • Practicing proper driving techniques on different terrains
    • Applying recovery skills in controlled scenarios
  • One-on-One Feedback & Adjustments
    • Instructor evaluation of each participant's driving skills
    • Addressing individual questions and concerns 

12:30 pm - Lunch and Feedback
